1. What is Free-Your-Idea?
Free-Your-Idea is a platform for free exchange and developement of ideas related to a contemporary art practice. Its goal is to carry the forms of open collaboration that arose in software development into the field of art.
2. What kind of ideas is this site for?
All kind of ideas. Although Free-Your-Idea is meant for people coming from an art background, the artistic aspect lies more in the approach and in the practice of dealing with a subject than in the subject itself.
3. Should I take part?
Yes. We believe that collaboration is able to produce excellent results, due to the vivid exchange of information, opinion and interpretation. It allows for a subject to be explored from a variety of viewpoints and to get enrichened through a wider set of resources.
4. How can I take part?
You can post new ideas, leave comments on existing projects, take part in discussions in the forums, help with the concrete realization of projects, help moderate the page, spread the word.
5. Do I have to register?
For reading, leaving comments and discussing in forums you don't. If you want to work actively on an idea project, you will have to. But you will only need to leave a valid e-mail address in order to do so.
6. Who is the author of the ideas on the site?
That depends on how you understand the meaning of "author".
On this site, if it is taken from a legal point of view, the answer is: anybody; while, if you take it from an art market point of view, the answer is: nobody.
7. If I post my idea, does it mean it is not mine anymore?
When you post an idea you basically put it at disposition of the community to work on it. This includes that a copyleft-license is automatically applied to it.
8. Do I have a responsibility on ideas that I have posted?
No, not unless you accept to moderate an idea-project. But you DO have a responsibility for your acts on the site: Please respect the work and opinion of your colleagues.
9. Can my ideas be stolen?
No. You can't steal anything that is given to you for free.
10. Can I use an idea from the site?
Of course. Although it would be nice to let the others, that are somehow involved with the idea, know about what you are going to do.
11. What happens if an idea takes a direction that I don’t like any more?
If you are a moderator: Try to find someone to take your role. If not, discuss it with the others or stop working on it. There is a possibility of versioning for the idea-projects and you can also re-post the idea with your changes, but it is probably more interesting to try to settle the differences.
12. What is the difference between idea and project?
The idea is just any post describing and/or documenting an idea. An idea project is an idea that already has a group of people willing to work on it with the goal of realizing it. Usually you can tell the difference by the number of member in the workgroup.
13. Where can I find information on how to use this site?
There is a demo video and a troubleshooting forum, where you can post your questions. Also read the stuff on the pages: Usually any form contains comments that explain the fields.
14. Who owns/is Free-Your-Idea?
Free-Your-Idea is a collective work that has grown out of the seminar "Kunst als Handlungsfeld", held throughout the academic year 2006/2007 at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. It is not owned by anybody and it is anybody who contributes.
15. What is the differnce btween Free-Your-Idea and any other community site?
There are many sites that allow for collaboration. What makes Free-Your-Idea special is the way its focus is reflected in its structure: instead of around users (like for example facebook or ning), Free-Your-Idea is centered around the idea workgroups.
